Natural gas in the natural state does not have an odor. Its distinct odor is added so that gas leaks can be detected more easily. Sufficient odor is added so that people with a normal sense of smell may detect gas in air concentrations where gas is less than 1%. Other ways to detect gas leaks include:
-
Sight, sound and feel
-
Vegetation discoloration or decay
-
Instruments
Take Action
If you smell gas or detect a gas leak while you are indoors:
-
Leave the building
-
Do not switch anything on or off
-
Do not use the telephone. (Call from a neighbor’s house or from a cell phone after you have left the building.)
-
Do not strike a match or do anything that might cause a spark
-
If you are outdoors, leave the immediate area and keep others away. Call your local gas utility company to report the emergency. Do not operate equipment near the leak. Stay on site until emergency crews arrive.
Report Emergencies
Gas leaks and other emergencies should be reported day or night immediately to your Natural Gas supplier. You should have their telephone number handy.
If conditions warrant, call 911.
