Quite often I get a call about a disposal not working. Here are some symptoms and possible solutions before you call Paul the plumber at 404-427-0302.

  1. Loud, clanging sound – There’s something in there about to jamb your machine. Turn off the power, reach your hand in there, feel around and try to get it out.
  2. “When I turn on the switch, nothing happens. I just hear a slight humming noise.” Turn off the switch. Get the jamb breaker wrench that came with your disposal. Stick one end in the hole in the center of the bottom of the machine and twist it back and forth until it will turn freely. Then, with the power off, reach your hand in and see if you can remove the obstacle that jammed your machine.
  3. “When I turn on the switch, no noise, no nothing.” On the bottom of the disposal is a little red button. Push it in. Turn on switch. Humming noise, but nothing else? Follow step 2 above.
  4. “My disposal fell off.” Sorry, it’s a goner. Make sure the switch is off and call Paul the plumber at 404-427-0302.

Keep your Disposal Clean

Once a month, dump in a stale tray of ice cubes and turn on your machine. This will keep the inside nice and clean. For a fresh scent, follow this procedure with a half a lemon. Always rinse with clean water for 10 or 15 seconds after using your disposal. This not only insures that all the wastes goes completely out of the drain, it cleans any salts out, protecting from corrosion.
